Grading scale

All cameras at Negative Club are carefully assessed and graded based on cosmetic condition and overall usability. This scale is designed to give you a clear, realistic idea of what to expect when buying a vintage film camera.

Please note: all cameras are tested before sale. If a camera doesn’t meet our functional standards, it won’t be listed.

Grading scale

99.9 – Near Perfect

Cameras graded 99.9 are in near-perfect condition and look almost brand new, with no visible cosmetic wear and no signs of prior use.

99 – Excellent

Cameras graded 99 are in excellent condition and may show some very minor cosmetic wear, but they remain fully functional in every respect.

98-96 – Very Good

Cameras graded between 98 and 96 are in very good condition, are fully functional and show cosmetic wear that is noticeable but consistent with normal, careful use.

95-90 – Good

Cameras graded between 95-90 are well loved and show visible signs of wear. The lens or viewfinder may have minor imperfections, however, all core functions still work reliably and the camera performs as intended.

89 and lower – Fair

Cameras graded 89 or lower are well-used and show significant wear or cosmetic imperfections and may have minor functional quirks or early signs of optical issues, such as light haze, dust, or slight separation, however, the camera remains usable for everyday shooting.

Understanding our vintage camera grading

Buying a vintage film camera should come with clarity and confidence. In this guide, we explain how Negative Club grades camera condition, what the numbers really mean, and how cosmetic wear relates to real-world performance.

A few important notes

Cosmetic condition does not always reflect image quality, as many vintage cameras with visible wear still perform beautifully. If you’re unsure which grade is right for you, you’re always welcome to get in touch before purchasing and we’ll be happy to help you choose.
