How Negative Club evaluates condition, collectability, and everyday usability
When you buy a vintage film camera online, you’re buying more than a tool. You’re choosing an object with history, character and a past life behind the shutter.
And naturally, you want to know:
What condition is it really in?
Will it work properly?
Is it right for a collector or better as a daily shooter?
That’s why every camera at Negative Club goes through a detailed inspection and testing process before it is ever offered for sale. We then apply a clear numerical camera condition grading scale to help you understand cosmetic wear, optical clarity and overall shooting reliability.
If it doesn’t meet our functional expectations for a reliable 35mm film camera, it doesn’t make it onto the site. Simple as that.
Why grading matters in film photography
No two vintage cameras age in the same way.
Some spend decades in cases and emerge almost untouched. Others travel the world, pick up marks, polish at the edges and carry the visible signs of thousands of frames. Yet both might produce equally stunning negatives.
A professional grading system helps separate appearance from performance. It tells you whether you’re looking at a museum-worthy collector’s piece or a beautifully worn everyday companion.
The Negative Club grading scale
99.9 – Near Perfect
These are exceptional examples of camera preservation.
A 99.9 grade means the body shows virtually no cosmetic wear, with surfaces, buttons, and finishes appearing almost factory fresh. For collectors of premium compact cameras or iconic point-and-shoot models, this is as close as it gets to new.
Rare. Special. Increasingly hard to find.

99 – Excellent
An excellent condition film camera with only the faintest signs of prior handling.
Any wear is minimal and typically only visible upon very close inspection. Functionally, the camera operates exactly as designed, making it ideal for buyers who want near-collector quality but still plan to shoot regularly.

98–96 – Very Good
Here you’ll notice honest, light cosmetic ageing.
Perhaps a small rub mark, gentle surface wear, or minor signs of use accumulated over years of careful ownership. Nothing that interferes with operation. Nothing that takes away from the experience of loading film and going out to create.
A favourite category for many photographers.

95–90 – Good
These cameras are proudly well loved.
Expect visible wear on the body. You might find minor imperfections in the lens or viewfinder, but all critical functions - metering, transport, autofocus (where applicable), flash, continue to perform reliably.
If you are looking for an affordable entry into 35mm photography or a dependable everyday carry, this tier often represents fantastic value.
89 and lower – Fair
Heavy cosmetic wear, clear signs of age, and the possibility of small operational quirks.
There may be early optical characteristics typical of older equipment, such as light haze or internal dust. Still, these cameras remain capable of making photographs and can be wonderful creative tools for shooters who prioritise output over appearance.
They are graded and priced transparently.
Cosmetic wear vs image quality
This is the part many new film photographers find surprising.
A camera can look rough and still produce incredible results.
Brassing, scratches, or fading paint rarely affect the lens design, exposure system, or the magic that happens on film. Some of the best images we’ve ever seen came from bodies that looked like they had lived a hundred lives.
Character does not mean compromise.
Tested, always
Before grading, every unit is checked to ensure it meets our expectations for usability. Transport systems run. Shutters fire. Electronics respond. Lenses are evaluated.
We do this because trust matters when buying vintage cameras online.
Choosing the right grade for you
Collectors, aesthetes, street photographers, first-time film shooters, everyone values different things.
If you want a display piece, lean higher.
If you want a daily companion, mid-grades are often perfect.
If you love character and story, the lower tiers can be incredibly rewarding.
And if you’re unsure, just talk to us. We’re always happy to help match you with the right camera.
At Negative Club, grading is about honesty, clarity and respect for the history of these beautiful machines.
Because the right expectations make the first roll even better.
